The Des Moines Science Fiction & Fantasy Society, INC (DMSFFS) is an non-profit charity 501(c)(3) organization located in Des Moines, Iowa. It is entirely volunteer run.

DMSFFS strives to inspire individuals and communities to READ, IMAGINE AND THINK; creating a better world through education and support of literacy, science and the arts.

DMSFFS generally meets the second and fourth Fridays of each month at the Valley Junction Activity Center Center at 217 5th Street in West Des Moines. It is two doors north of the Tavern Restaurant in the Valley Junction district. Officers meeting starts at 6:30 pm with a business meeting and program at 7:00 pm. There is a parking lot off of the 4th Street side of the building. Be sure the check the calendar for more information or any changes.

In addition to the bi-monthly meetings we host DemiCon, Summer and Winter SACC, DemiCon Lites (our monthly educational program), and a monthly movie get together.

Our big event is DemiCon – Des Moines’ Annual Science Fiction, Fantasy and Gaming Convention.

For many years the organization was known at the Des Moines Science Fiction Society, LTD, a fraternal non-profit. It was re-imagined in 2018 and reformed as a charity non-profit to focus more on education and the love of reading through literacy, science and the arts.

Organization Information

The Des Moines Science Fiction & Fantasy Society (DMSFFS) is a 501(c)(3) organization that seeks to work cooperatively with local individuals, organizations, and media to promote a variety of causes, including: scientific research, space exploration, literacy, and the arts.

Persons seeking information on science, science-fiction, or fantasy-related topics, and organizations looking for additional resources (including volunteers) for similarly-related activities, are invited to contact any club officer or member at info@dmsffs.org.

DMSFFS is the sponsor of DemiCon, Des Moines’ annual science fiction, fantasy and gaming convention. But we do other things, too, such as getting together twice a month to discuss science fiction and fantasy, have programs with educational opportunities and hold meetings to keep everyone up to date on upcoming events. Go to a monthly movie. Hosting DemiCon Lites to learn awesome things and supporting the community like knitting, computer security, listening to live music, costuming, walking for a cause, and the list goes on. Also for throwing some bodacious parties (oops — excuse me; I meant, “gathering for the semiannual DMSFFS constitutional conventions”). And most essentially like enjoying the company of others that share our interests.

DMSFFS generally meets the second and fourth Fridays of each month at the Valley Junction Activity Center at 217 5th Street. It is 2 doors north of the Tavern Restaurant in the Valley Junction district. There is a parking lot off of the 4th Street side of the building with plenty of room. The building is a 2 story sandstone building with burgundy awnings and trim. We meet in the lower level large room. Check the calendar/event page for any meeting changes.

DMSFFS attending membership is open to all sentient beings, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, creed, sex, gender, age, number of limbs, nation or planet of origin, or any other identities represented among our diverse society.

If you live in, or even just occasionally visit, the Des Moines area then for heaven’s sake, join us! If you have any questions concerning DMSFFS, please e-mail us at info@dmsffs.org.

Now that you know all this, you no longer have an excuse not to at least stop by once in a while to say, “Hi.” We’d appreciate the opportunity to meet you and find out who you are.
